Protect Your Home
If someone breaks into your home, garage or outbuilding, it is called a "burglary." Approximately 642 residential burglaries occurred in the City of Eugene in 2019. The EPD Community Engagement Team offers several services to help you protect your home from being burglarized.
Home Security Inspections
In the interest of public health, we are not currently offering Home Security Inspections in person. Please watch this page for updates, related to security inspections being offered again in person, but in the meantime, we are offering them remotely. On this page below, there is information related to Neighborhood Watch. While our Home Vacation Check program is on hold, you might consider employing the help of trusted neighbors, to keep an eye on your property while you are away. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
The Eugene Police Department offers free "Home Security Inspections" to Eugene residents. During the inspection, a Community Engagement Specialist will come to your home and offer suggestions to improve security. EPD’s Community Engagement Specialists are assigned by areas or "beats" of the city. Please contact the Community Engagement Specialist assigned to your "beat" to request this service. Home Vacation Check Program
The Home Vacation Check Program is a service offered by the Eugene Police Department, to help you better protect your home while on vacation. Seniors on Patrol, trained volunteers from the Eugene Police Department, will perform a thorough inspection of your property while you are away on vacation. If you would like to participate in this program, please follow this link for more information: https://www.eugene-or.gov/1969/Home-Vacation-Check.
If you are the victim of a burglary, it is very important that you can provide a detailed description (including serial numbers when at all possible) of your property. If your property is recovered, the likelihood of the property being returned to you is significantly increased, if detailed information is in the report. Property inventories can be as simple as listing the items and descriptions on a piece of paper and keeping that information in a secure location for future reference.
Our City is built on the strength of our citizens. Every day, citizens encounter situations calling upon them to be the "eyes and ears" of law enforcement. Not only does Neighborhood Watch allow citizens to help address crime, it is also an opportunity for communities to bond through service. The Neighborhood Watch Program draws upon the compassion of average citizens, asking them to lend their neighbors a hand.
