Urban Forestry

The Urban Forestry program manages more than 76,000 public street trees. Our team strives to promote a healthier and more sustainable urban forest, foster community tree awareness and stewardship, and develop tree projects and regulations.

In addition to their aesthetic value, city trees provide significant ecosystem services essential for our current and future generations.

We aim to increase Eugene's tree canopy cover from 22 to 30 percent by the year 2030. We have focused our upcoming planting efforts on the highest priority and hottest areas, based on a variety of health index and socio-economic factors. With this approach, we can begin to address quality of life disparities in historically underserved neighborhoods.

November 2022 Update:

With the recent confirmed report of emerald ash borer in Oregon, the City of Eugene has placed a moratorium planting ash trees on public land in Eugene. During this time, Urban Forestry will not approve planting permits for ash tree planting in the right-of-way. Please contact Urban Forestry for questions about other suitable species for your planting projects.
