High Street Protected Bikeway

Project Description

The High Street Protected Bikeway will connect the Amazon Path to the Riverbank Path — creating a comfortable and accessible travel option for community members of all ages and abilities to access south Eugene, downtown Eugene, and destinations in between.

The High Street Protected Bikeway will include the following:

• Installation of a two-way protected bikeway on High Street (19th Avenue to 6th Avenue)
• Removal of one travel lane on High Street (19th Avenue to 11th Avenue)
• Parking removal on some blocks of High Street (11th Avenue to 6th Avenue)
• Bike signals at all existing traffic signals
• Updated bike wayfinding signs
• Connection to the new 13th Avenue Bikeway (linking the University of Oregon campus to downtown Eugene)
• Connection to the Amazon Path and the Riverbank Path (linking to the new Downtown Riverfront Development)

Project Timeline

Bidding to secure a contractor will occur this fall.  Once the contractor is selected this section will be updated with dates.  Basically, construction will start early in 2023 and the entire project is planned to be completed by the end of the year. Project Background

The Central Eugene in Motion study explored solutions for three key corridors: Downtown on 8th Avenue, Midtown Willamette Street, and the Amazon to Riverfront connection. After a community process that included stakeholder meetings, two open houses, surveys, online mapping and a series of focus groups with sub-area stakeholders, several projects were chosen:

• Midtown Willamette Street: Two-Way Conversion & Paving of Willamette, 20th and Oak Completed 2021
• Downtown on 8th Avenue: 8th Avenue Streetscape & Protected Bike Lanes Starting 2023
• Amazon to Riverfront Connection: High Street Two-Way Protected Bikeway Starting 2023

Public Involvement

After a Central Eugene in Motion community process that included stakeholder meetings, two open houses, surveys, online mapping, a trial evaluation of a one-lane section of High Street south of 11th, a series of focus groups with sub-area stakeholders, design refinement with affected property owners, and a final staff and leadership review, Alternative #3 was selected for the Amazon to Riverfront connection: a two-way protected bikeway on High Street.
